Dr. James O. Hill

James O. Hill, PhD, is Professor of Nutrition Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and director/PI of UAB’s NIH-funded Nutrition Obesity Research Center. A leading obesity scientist for 40+ years, Dr. Hill’s work focuses on energy balance, lifestyle interventions, and long-term weight-loss maintenance. He co-founded the National Weight Control Registry and later the International Weight Control Registry, and helped pioneer the “small changes” approach via America On the Move. He has published 650+ papers, led major trials (e.g., DPP, Look AHEAD), and drives precision nutrition initiatives. His honors include election to the National Academy of Medicine (2014), an NIH MERIT Award (1998), the Obesity Society’s TOPS and George Bray Founder’s awards, and multiple American Society for Nutrition awards (Centrum, McCollum, Kritchevsky), plus the USDA’s 2012 Atwater Lectureship.
