Dr. Dan Cox

Dr. Daniel W. Cox is a Professor at the University of British Columbia and holds the Myrne B. Nevison Professorship in Counselling Psychology. Dan has been at UBC since 2012, where he oversees UBC’s Counselling Psychology Program. At UBC, Dan teaches several courses, but recently he has been primarily teaching courses designed to facilitate students becoming more effective helpers. 

 

Dan does mental-health research on helping and change processes; particularly processes related to suicide, depression, and PTSD. Currently, Dan is involved in a series of funded projects examining how to best help those in suicidal crisis.

Amie Orsetti

Amie is a master of arts student in the Counselling Psychology program at UBC. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (Hons) with a minor of counselling at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in 2024. Amie has worked in both the Lifespan Cognition Lab and Matsuba Applied Development Lab at KPU. She also volunteers with Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. Her main areas of interest are emotion regulation, mental health, and well-being. Her current work explores how emotion regulation is intertwined in the process of counselling and therapy outcomes. In her spare time, Amie enjoys camping, fishing, reading, and playing with her dogs.

Dr. Antonio Pascual-Leone

Dr. Antonio Pascual-Leone is a clinical psychologist and professor at the University of Windsor. He is an expert in emotion-focused therapy (EFT) and known for his research on emotional change, particularly in resolving unresolved emotional pain. His work emphasizes how structured therapeutic processes can help clients move through emotional difficulties and improve mental health.
He has authored or co-authored several books including Emotion-Focused Therapy for Complex Trauma and Principles of Emotion Change: What works and when in psychotherapy and everyday. He has won several awards including several awards for his research and for his teaching.

Dr. E. David Klonsky

Dr. Klonsky is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia. His research examines suicide, including the pursuit of parsimonious models of suicide and better understanding of suicide motivations and warning signs. Dr. Klonsky also pursues research interests in emotion, personality, and assessment, many of which overlap with his work on suicide.

Dr. James Boswell

Dr. James Boswell is an Associate Professor of Psychology at SUNY Albany. His research focuses on psychotherapy processes and outcomes, particularly in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), therapist competence, and the integration of evidence-based practices in routine clinical care. He is widely recognized for his work on therapist-client interactions, treatment personalization, and psychotherapy training.

Dr. Boswell has published extensively in leading psychology journals and has contributed significantly to advancing the understanding of how therapy works and how to improve its effectiveness. In addition to his research, he is committed to training future clinicians and advancing clinical psychology through evidence-based approaches.

Dr. Jesse Owen

Dr. Jesse Owen is a psychologist and professor at the University of Denver. His research focuses on psychotherapy processes and outcomes, particularly in couples therapy and multicultural issues in counseling. He has authored numerous publications on therapeutic relationships, client outcomes, and therapist effectiveness, and his work aims to improve the quality and equity of mental health services.

Dr. Owen has received multiple awards for his contributions to counseling psychology and psychotherapy research, including recognition from the American Psychological Association. He is also dedicated to mentoring students and fostering diversity in the field.

Dr. Jon Elhai

Jon D. Elhai, Ph.D., is Distinguished University Professor at the University of Toledo in the Departments of Psychology (primary appointment) and Psychiatry (joint appointment). Dr. Elhai primarily conducts research on cyberpsychology and internet addictions. He teaches undergraduate and graduate psychology courses. He also conducts forensic psychological consultation.

Dr. Katie Aafjes-van Doorn

Dr Katie Aafjes-van Doorn is currently an Area Head of Social Sciences and an Associate Professor of Psychology at NYU Shanghai. Dr Aafjes-van Doorn completed her first MSc in Clinical Psychology at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She then moved to the UK to complete her MSc in Psychological Research, and her Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at University of Oxford. She completed her research postdoc at Adelphi University, New York and has since worked at the Graduate School of Psychology, Yeshiva University, New York, where she is now Associate Professor. She is also the Associate Editor for the journal Clinical Psychology: Science & Practice, and the Clinical-lead of a startup company that develops AI-based multi-modal assessments for mental health. She has published over 60 peer reviewed papers, co-authored several books and book- chapters and is a regular speaker at (inter)national conferences.

Dr. Ken Critchfield

Dr. Ken Critchfield, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor and Program Director of the Clinical Psychology Program of the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology at Yeshiva University. Dr. Critchfield is particularly known for his pioneering work in Interpersonal Reconstructive Therapy (IRT) and the Structural Analysis of Social Behavior (SASB). His research has significantly advanced the understanding of interpersonal dynamics within psychotherapy, particularly in the treatment of complex mental health conditions like personality disorders. Dr. Critchfield integrates interpersonal theory with evidence-based therapeutic practices to unravel maladaptive relational patterns that contribute to psychological distress. Dr. Ken Miller

Dr. Ken Miller is an Associate Professor and Edith Landau Chair at the University of British Columbia. Previously, he was a Senior Researcher at War Child Holland, an international non-profit organization that works to improve the resilience and wellbeing of children living with violence and armed conflict. He joined War Child in 2015 to help establish the organization’s Research and Development Department, where he developed and evaluated psychosocial interventions for conflict-affected communities. Previously, Dr. Miller was an Associate Professor of Psychology at Lesley University (2012–14), Pomona College (2005–08), and San Francisco State University (2004–05) where he was initially an Assistant Professor (1999–2004). He has published extensively on the mental health effects of armed conflict and displacement, and co-edited the book The Mental Health of Refugees. His book War Torn explores resilience and its limits in six war-affected communities.

Dr. Matthew Large

Matthew Large is a Conjoint Professor in the School of Psychiatry, UNSW and he is the Clinical Director of Mental Health in the Eastern Suburbs Mental Health Service, based at the Prince of Wales Hospitals in Sydney. Dr Large has longstanding research interests in suicide, psychiatric aspects of homicide, and substance abuse by people with mental illness. He is a leading critic of current risk assessment practices in mental health care and is a highly ranked international researcher in both suicide and homicide.  Dr Large is regularly engaged in coronial and other legal proceedings and in external service reviews after the deaths of psychiatric patients in the Australian States and Territories.

Dr. Nadya Fouad

Nadya A. Fouad is a faculty member in the Counseling Psychology division of the Department of Educational Psychology. A Board Certified Counseling Psychologist, her research examines how people make work and career-related decisions, with an emphasis on understanding the work choices of women and underrepresented populations. Dr. Fouad teaches Foundations in Career Development at the master’s level and Vocational Psychology and Professional, Ethical and Legal Issues in Counseling Psychology at the doctoral level. In addition to classroom instruction, she supervises doctoral students in the practicum sequence, advises students’ dissertation research, and has chaired 52 dissertation committees.

Dr. Robert Krueger

Dr. Robert Krueger is a professor of psychology at the University of Minnesota, known for his research on the intersection of personality, psychopathology, and genetics. He played a key role in developing the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders, which redefines how personality disorders are conceptualized in terms of dimensional traits rather than categorical diagnoses. Dr. Ron Levant

Ronald F. Levant, Ed.D., ABPP, earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology & Public Practice from Harvard University. He has held academic positions at Boston University, Rutgers, Harvard Medical School, and Nova Southeastern University, where he served as Dean. Currently, he is Professor Emeritus at The University of Akron, where he was Dean of the Buchtel College of Arts & Sciences.

A former President of the APA (2005) and Editor of *Psychology of Men and Masculinity* (2007-2015), Dr. Levant has authored or co-authored 19 books and over 250 peer-reviewed articles. He is renowned for his research on the psychology of men and masculinities and developed several psychological measures, including the Male Role Norms Inventory (MRNI) and Normative Male Alexithymia Scale (NMAS). His "Normative Male Alexithymia" hypothesis led to the creation of Alexithymia Reduction Treatment (ART), a psychoeducational intervention to help men engage more fully in psychotherapy.

Dr. Terry Tracey

Terence J. G. Tracey is professor emeritus of counseling and counseling psychology at Arizona State University, where he served in various administrative roles, including department head and associate dean. He is the former editor-in-chief of the Journal of Counseling Psychology and has authored over 200 articles and book chapters.

His research focuses on four areas: client-therapist interaction, interpersonal personality models, vocational interests, and the academic success of minority students. Tracey has received numerous accolades, including the Lifetime Distinguished Achievement Award in Vocational Psychology and the Leona Tyler Award from the Society of Counseling Psychology.
