Dr. Richard Koestner
Dr. Richard Koestner (PhD) is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at McGill University whose research focuses on human motivation, goal-setting, self-regulation and internalization processes. His work asks how individuals choose and pursue meaningful goals and how social-cultural forces guide which guidelines become internalized versus controlled. He is particularly known for applying Self‑Determination Theory to examine when motivation stemming from autonomy versus external rewards leads to adaptive or maladaptive outcomes. His lab—the McGill Human Motivation Lab—examines topics ranging from goal disengagement, motivational crises, to autonomy support in parenting and minority communities. Dr. Koestner has published hundreds of scientific articles and his work has been widely cited worldwide. Among his honours, he received the Donald O. Hebb Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology as a Science.
