Dr. Carl Castro

Dr. Carl A. Castro is a professor at the University of Southern California's Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work, where he directs the Military and Veteran Programs. He joined USC in 2013 after a 33-year career in the U.S. Army, retiring as a colonel. His military service began in 1981 as an infantryman, and he held various research and leadership roles, including director of the Military Operational Medicine Research Program. Dr. Castro completed two tours in Iraq and participated in peacekeeping missions in Saudi Arabia, Bosnia, and Kosovo.

An expert in military behavioral health, Dr. Castro has authored over 150 scientific publications. His research focuses on the psychological effects of combat, military transitions, trauma, suicidality, and the integration of diverse groups within military culture. He currently chairs a NATO research group on military veteran transitions and serves on several Department of Defense advisory panels.
